What If...he was Edward....?

While it’s true that these days, most people would agree that Robert Pattinson has more than done justice to the role of Edward Cullen, the initial reaction to his casting was not all positive. Who can forget the petition signed by over 70,000 to get rid of him? When I asked my twitter followers who they would want for Edward if they couldn’t have Rob, there was near revolt! My, my, how times have changed. But did you ever wonder who else was in line for the part?

Of course there were other finalists for the role. Rob was the last actor to audition. Catherine Hardwicke recently revealed the other top candidates were Jackson Rathbone, Ben Barnes and Shiloh Fernandez. I have to say, Jackson’s name was the one that most surprised me on that list. What if Jackson had been cast as Edward? How would Twilight have been different? What would the chemistry have been like?

(Side Note - What would Edward’s hair have been like? I think we must offer our thanks to Rob for refusing to wear the extensions that he spent eight hours having put in so that Edward would have the “long, timeless hair,” that Catherine had pictured. Wow, we seriously dodged a bullet there.)

Again, I went to my twitter followers, this time asking only if they could see Jackson as Edward. For a second time, I was surprised by the reaction. Jackson has a lot of fans in the Twilight world, one even referred to him as “the most beautiful thing on Earth.” While his acting abilities were not at all brought into question, only one person felt he could be Edward. It’s impossible to know if that’s because we’re all so used to Rob in the role, or we just don’t think Jackson was right for it. If the role had originally gone to Jackson, and for some reason he was now being replaced, would we welcome Rob to the role, or would pandemonium break out in the Twilight universe? Is it merely because we have seen Rob play Edward that the thought of anyone else being him is ridiculous?

I feel it’s safe to say that Twilight would not have been the same with different actors. We have come to love these characters even more through the people who have brought them to life for us on the big screen. Could Jackson have been Edward? I certainly would have enjoyed an Edward with those lovely dimples. But having said that, I think Catherine and Kristen made the right choice. Rob is my perfect Edward and Jackson is my perfect Jasper. I look forward to seeing more of Jackson as his role is fleshed out in the coming movies.

Jackson Studying For 'Eclipse'

In the November release of second film in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, some characters with limited screen time will see their roles expanded. One popular figure from the books was Jasper Hale, played by Jackson Rathbone, who had a very limited role. That’s about to change. In New Moon and the now filming third installment, Eclipse, Rathbone will have a chance to give depth to his Civil War Era human-turned-mood-altering-vampire.

“I’ve been studying up a lot on the Civil War and that era; it really was a crazy time, it was all-out war on our own turf and between countrymen,” Jackson told MTV News. “It’s an interesting time to see when Jasper was actually human, and what his human form was, and when he gets turned how intense and how dark he is. Then [we'll see] his realization of what he’s become, him finding Alice and being redeemed by love.”

In Eclipse, the Cullen family needs a leader and Jasper steps up to the plate to deliver the fighting techniques they’ll need to defeat Victoria’s army of blood thirsty newborns. Rathbone is given more substance to work with in the coming films and says that fans will get to see Jasper work his emotion calming magic in a school scene in New Moon.

Also, I’m in London now for the UK premiere of Dread. It plays on Sunday August 30th, at the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square in the heart of London’s West End which is a 1300 seater. Jackson Rathbone and his band, 100 Monkeys, hit the road

(August 28, 2009) Los Angeles – New Castle Entertainment announced today that they have partnered with Jackson Rathbone and his band, 100 Monkeys, to schedule and promote a one hundred city tour that will kick off September 12th in Vancouver. Rathbone is in Vancouver filming ‘Eclipse’, the third installment of the Twilight saga.

Jackson recently completed filming M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Air Bender in Pennsylvania. While he was there, he and the band completed a two-month East Coast tour, with every show sold out. The band is made up of Rathbone’s high school confidantes, Ben Graupner and Ben Johnson, along with his friends Jerad Anderson and Lawrence Abrams.

The thing that makes the band so unique is that each member can play every instrument. In between songs, one of them yells ’switcharoo’ and they all switch instruments. “It’s amazing to see musicians that can play six or seven different instruments without missing a beat. There’s never a dull moment when they’re on stage,” said Tim Crockett of New Castle Entertainment.

The band has been featured on MTV, VH1, Entertainment Tonight and in People Magazine. Their eclectic blend of soulful music has been compared to The Doors, Tom Waits and Coldplay. At the band’s first Vancouver concert in February, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and almost the entire cast of Twilight showed up. “I was blown away when Entertainment Tonight interviewed us. We’re grateful to have the support of so many people,” said Jerad Anderson of 100 Monkeys.

The band is in talks with Saturday Night Live to be the musical guests the week of November 20th when New Moon hits theaters. They will also have a CD signing at Barnes & Noble in New York City the same week.

Their concert on September 12th will be at The Rickshaw Theater at 8pm. It’s a historic Chinese theater that was built in the 50’s and was recently updated and re-opened as a music venue. 100 Monkeys will be picking two lucky winners from the audience for a meet & greet with the band. Tickets are only $20 and it’s an all ages show.

Even before “Twilight” won 11 awards, including Best Drama, at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday night (August 9), two of the movie’s stars, Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone, had theories about the secret to the film’s overwhelming success with teenagers.

“Rob’s hair. Jackson’s hair,” Lutz joked to MTV News at the TCA red carpet. “[The movie studio] Summit’s brilliant with casting people with awesome hair and full lips.”

His co-star Rathbone jokingly added that it doesn’t hurt that the love story also involves some hair. But before the show, he couldn’t choose which castmates he really wanted to see pick up a surfboard award.

“I got to pull for our brother, Rob, but, I mean, Taylor [Lautner's] a great guy,” he said, not knowing at the time that both guys would end up taking home a prize. “We’re caught between a lot of our friends, a lot of our friends are nominated so just stay politically correct. So it’s the teens’ choice, whatever they decide.”

Well, guys, it looks like the teens spoke and it seems like they have enough love for all of you.
